Tara began her research into complementary healing methods in the early 1990's. Soon thereafter she went on to pursue her Master Herbalist diploma through Wild Rose College in Calgary, Alberta. As a Holistic Practitioner she has been constantly learning and integrating therapies based on Western Herbalism, Iridology, Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupressure. Her latest addition to the holistic tool kit is the use of Aromatherapy for dogs and cats.
Tara's practice focuses primarily on complementary therapies and nutrition for animals. However, in an attempt to help us process our own emotional baggage our pets often mirror our stress, much like children. In this case they may exhibit physical or behavioral signs and symptoms which are resistant to treatment, allopathic or otherwise, or which return as soon as treatment stops. In order to really take good care of a pet , you have to take into account the health of the human companion/s that share his or her life. In that respect, Tara's practice still includes those 2-legged clients as required.
A holistic healing perspective is far removed from what most of us have been taught. Here is the platform for looking at disesase as having a purpose. It includes 4 levels of being, the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. We must consider all levels of being to understand why the disease might be manifesting. Most importantly, the symptoms show us that something is out of balance, whether it be with the diet, genetic predisposition, lifestyle or something\one in the animal's environment. The ailment, if we are conscious and allow it to, may help be the catalyst to get some aspect of life back the way nature intended, or it might be the signal needed to let us know where the body requires some natural support to make up for genetic weakness.
Along this road to recovery we might also encounter a healing crisis - when the body finally has enough energy or vitality to detoxify itself of accumulated toxins. This may be experienced as symptoms of a former illness or appear to be an extreme flare-up of the current condition. The benefit of the healing crisis is that immediately following it one generally enjoys renewed health and vitality, whereas suppression of these symptoms with pharmaceuticals prevents this natural cleansing process and prolongs the problem by driving toxins into deeper tissue and forcing the body to look for yet another illness to signal that something is out of balance.
For generations we have minimized the complex nature of our animal companions, seeing them as very basic creatures with simple needs. In our modern urban society, their roles and diets have changed greatly, and most of us are only beginning to realize that far from an "inferior species" that needs to be dominated and controlled, these unconditionally loving creatures are often our greatest teachers, our emotional and spiritual guides that are capable of helping us see where we are challenged and where we need to grow.

Food Therapy - Canine/Feline Whole and Raw Foods Nutritional Counselling
"You are what you eat" is a much used expression that is only partly correct. "You are what you absorb and assimilate" would be much more accurate. Then add to that every animal's unique predisposition to disease based on breeding, vaccination protocol, the mother's health and nutrition, competition for nurturing (runts), exposure to toxins (ex: smokers in the home), and emotionally "negative" or abusive environments. Just like with people, a strong constitution can go a long way in allowing an animal to maintain reasonable health with a minimum of nutrition and a stressful environment. But it does catch up with them eventually, it just takes a bit longer. As we are all unique in terms of genetic strength, so are our pets. Unfortunately, they don't come into our lives with signs around their neck indicating "strong" or "weak" disposition. So why play Russian roulette by giving them generic prepackaged kibble, the most denatured processed garbage full of synthetic preservatives, sugar, road-kill, euthanized pets, and various other substances banned from human consumption, and expect that they should thrive on it, day in day out?
By providing our pets with the most optimum bio-available nutrients from day one, we can help contribute to their strong growth and developement into adult life stages, and prevent many of the allergies and degenerative conditions now commonly seen in young animals.
We did our animals a grave disservice when we allowed a commercial industry to dictate nutritional policy to our veterinary schools, completely sidestepping common sense. We used to feed real food to our pets, and they were much healthier for it. Instead of focusing on the discovery of pharmaceutical "cures" for so many of the chronic degenerative diseases and cancers that are now prevalent in the domestic pet world, look to what you are feeding Fluffy and Fido. Start with REAL food, whether cooked or raw, and see what disease symptoms remain after your pet has been getting the basic building blocks of life, minus the garbage, into his system on a daily basis. When dealing with more complex or advanced stages of disease, as is common with older animals, "On the Trail" Animal Wellness's nutritional counselling will help you formulate a unique nutritional program tailored to your pet's specific needs.

Holistic Therapies: Herbs, Nutritional Supplements, Homeopathy, EFT (energy work), Aromatherapy, Acupressure
Sometimes, despite the best feeding regimen our pets need some extra help. Herbs or nutritional supplements can help in a wide variety of cases, and they won't contribute to more degeneration or higher toxin levels in the body as will pharmaceuticals.
When a person is dedicated to helping his\her pet get well or to maintain comfort levels in the older pet, acupressure is a wonderful tool that assists the energy flow in the meridian systems and provides a higher level of bonding and awareness between you and your pet.
Homeopathy is a wonderfully safe and effective means of treating your pet. Even homeopathic vaccines are available which allows you to skip compromising of your pets immune system on a yearly basis, and most likely prevent the chronic skin disorders and auto-immune diseases that many holistic vets are now correlating to over-vaccination.
A dog's or cat's highly developed sense of smell might lead you to believe that aromatherapy is not suitable for them. As with any treatment, herbal or otherwise, the correct dosage and strength for the individual animal is critical. Aromatherapy for dogs generally works at a concentration that is safe and well tolerated yet also effective for small children. For cats, who are even more sensitive to essential oils, hydrosols are generally considered the safest way to go. A wide variety of ailments may be helped with essential oils including: allergies, itchy skin, anxiety, burns, congestion, cracked paw pads, cuts and scrapes, ear mites and infections, flatulence, flea and tick infestations, greif, hyperactivity, joint and muscle pain, mange, hot spots, and immune weakness.
"On the Trail" Animal Wellness has several therapeutic, high quality organic essential oil and organic hydrosol blends to treat common conditions in cats and dogs. Please Contact Us for more information.
